Marine Wire, Boat Cable and Marine Primary Wire

What is marine wire and why do I need to use it on my boat?

Marine wire, Boat Cable and Marine primary Wire are some of the terms used in many marine electrical regulations where electical wiring is specified. For instance, marine battery cable called upon in boat wiring differs in many ways from typicall automotive electrical cable or other general use power wire.
Although the wires appear similiar at first glance, there is indeed a differrence in the conditions surrounding marine specific installations that require marine wiring to outperform it's counterparts, that are designed primarilly for land use.

Marine wire, what are some of the differences to look for?

Some quick items to investigate when finding a suitable marine wire, boat cable, or marine primary wire:

All marine wires that have been investigated by UL will meet the requirements of UL1426, the numerical standard referenced in the BDFX.info reference standard for boat cable.
Marine wire, boat cable and marine primary wire meeting UL1426 approval are notated as such in the legend of the wire, required by UL to be printed every one foot on the side of the cable.

The markings to look for on a UL1426 approved wire will be any of the following:

  • UL1426
  • Boat Cable
  • BC5-W2 (which is a temperature rating of boat cable specific to UL1426)

UL approved cable will contain an E-File number that can be entered into the UL database to see the company's registaration on file with the UL and will accompany at least one of the above required markings for boat cable.

Marine wire regulations and electrical information

What boating code calls for what wire installation?

The two main authors of widely accepted and industry approved marine electrical wiring methods are the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
The USCG's standards are available to the public at no cost online and the ABYC standards are available for purchase at the ABYC website.

What general characteristics of a marine wire, boat cable or marine primary wire?

Due to the demanding marine environment, marine approved wire will be all of the following:

  • Flexible stranded copper conductor
  • The copper will generally have an electroplated tin coating applied causing the strand to be noted commonly as "tinned copper", which is designed to greatly reduce corrosion.
  • The jacket and/or insulation of the cable will have been tested to a flamability standard for safety
  • The jacket and insulation is rated water resistant

How do I know what style marine wire to use?

Different installations of boat cabling require different types of wire

Typical marine electrical circuits and their commonly used wire type

  • Battery installations--Marine Battery Cable
  • DC Main power take offs--Marine Battery Cable or DC Duplex Wire
  • AC Wiring -AC Duplex Wire or AC Triplex Wire
  • DC Electrical Switches, Controls--Marine Primary Wire or DC Duplex Wire
